Agents' correspondence, 1865-1866.

Correspondence from two Illinois military state agents concerns Illinois troop activity in Memphis; St. Louis; Galveston; New Orleans; and New Bern, North Carolina. Correspondence includes expense accounts for transportation costs; lodging; and aid to hospitalized soldiers (e.g., sanitary supplies; shirts; tobacco). Also included in the correspondence are orders from the Adjutant General concerning military state agent transfers and report receipt acknowledgements. Individuals and agencies also wrote to the agents about individual soldiers.

The Illinois General Assembly authorized the Governor to appoint, assign and/or remove six military state agents who were to promote the interests of Illinois army volunteers (1865). The nine men who held these positions were commissioned as honorary colonels (first appointees being commissioned on March 1, 1865) and submitted monthly reports to the Illinois Adjutant General.
